A Holladay Blog Series

Fred Scott is a Director of Engineering with Holladay Properties’ Nashville, TN office. He has been with the company since December 20, 2010. Get to know Fred in this February 2020 interview.

Q: What do you like most about working for Holladay Properties?

Fred: The people and the ethical nature of the company.

Q: Before working at Holladay, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Fred: I was the only person responsible for the grounds maintenance of an apartment complex. The reason it was most interesting is because I had full freedom to do what I thought was best for the property and the residents. I started there
at 18 years old; in the 5 years I was there, I learned a lot and enjoyed myself most of the time. The most interesting was when my manager made the mistake of ordering a semi load of flowers for the spring planting. I had to build about a thousand square feet of raised flower beds to use them up. I also learned how to grow roses that year.

Q: Where is your hometown?

Fred: Ann Arbor, MI

Q: What did you want to be when growing up?

Fred: Veterinarian

Q: Do you have any any general family / education / background you would like to share?

Fred: I have been self-sufficient since the age of 16. I thrive on learning and enjoy teaching. I started my career at the bottom and worked my way to where I am now. This means I was paid to pick up dog turds the first day on the job. That was at age 16. I spent 18 years in the apartment maintenance industry before moving to commercial property maintenance for 4 years. I then spent about 6 years at GE representing the interests of a tenant in a corporate setting. Since 2007, I have been involved in my current role (with 2 companies including Holladay) working as Director of Engineering for the MOBs.

Q: Favorite vacation destination?

Fred: Anywhere in my camper with my wife Sue and my dog Bailey. 

Q: What is the one thing you cannot live without?

Fred: Dog.

Q: What is your biggest pet peeve?

Fred: People that judge (or make up their mind) without first listening with an open mind. 

Q: What is on your bucket list?

Fred: I would like to visit all 50 states.

Q: People would be surprised to know what?

Fred: I once shared a house with the members of Greenpeace Midwest.
